Target Free Family Saturday: Candy Land
FREE ALL DAY!Celebrate food and all things candy at JANM! Fun treats for the entire family!
Generously sponsored by Target, these special Saturdays are filled with fun activities giving families unique ways to learn, play, and grow together.
ALL DAY CRAFT ACTIVITIES:
SCHEDULE:
11 AM: Doors open
12:00 PM: International candy buffet by Sweetlips Design (while supplies last, for children only)
12:30 PM:– 30-minute tour of our Historic Building, the former home of the Nishi Hongwanji Buddhist Temple (15 max)
1 – 4 PM: Take a photo and put on a chocolate lollipop! (while supplies last, for children only)
1 - 4 PM: Kidding Around the Kitchen will celebrate Valentines Day with a fancy fresh fruit kebab with a strawberry rose on top
2 PM: Fugetsu-Do Sweet Shop mochi* demonstration and tasting.
4 PM: Doors close
*Mochi is a Japanese confection, found usually in the shape of a small, round rice cake which can be eaten with various condiments.

Sweetlips Design is the chocolate-dipped and candy-coated lovechild of April Castelo-Canlas' formal education in fine art and design, her background in retail visual merchandising, and a career in fashion licensing-- All sprinkled generously with her natural knack for event planning and keen eye for detail.
Fueled by a fiercely creative imagination and driven by intuitive artistic and technical skills, April creates a multitude of memorable, one-of-a-kind event experiences as individual and unique as each of her clients. No two projects are ever exactly the same.
Always experimenting with new ideas, she cites "love, art, childhood memories, nature, family and friends" as her main sources of inspiration.
April lives in Los Angeles with her fiancé Nickolaus. She enjoys painting, sports, cooking, hiking, and of course, entertaining for family and friends.

Kidding Around The Kitchen
WHAT WE DO:
Kidding Around the Kitchen (KATK) brings a “hands on” cooking experience and lesson to the classroom in which the kids actively participate in the preparation of recipes. The result of their cutting, measuring cooking and then eating their creations is more than simply a lesson in health. They get to see, touch, smell and taste the fruits, vegetables, nuts, cheeses, eggs, meats and other ingredients that they may never have previously see in their raw form. The classes reinforce math, science, reading and vocabulary all within a one hour lesson. Measuring cups and spoons help with fractions. Multiplication and division are used when recipes are reduced or increased. Solids become liquids, bread rises, pancakes expand, and science is suddenly edible. Pronouncing ingredient names and reading recipes help to enlarge vocabulary. Studying food labels promotes an awareness of natural and "not so natural" ingredients used in everyday items.
WHY WE DO IT:
At KATK we recognize that children often drive the eating habits of paring a meal, their choices instinctively move to more natural and less processed ingredients. At home, armed with a cookbook from each session, the kids ask to recreate what they’ve learned in class, (often using the same ingredients that only days before were “yuck!”).

Fugetsu-Do Sweet Shop
Fugetsu-Do has been a family owned and operated confectionery store in Little Tokyo since 1903. Japanese rice cakes, more commonly known as mochi (rice cake) and manju (sweet bean-filled rice cake), are the staple. The shop, which is currently operated by Brian Kito, is located on East First Street, in the heart of the Historic District of Little Tokyo. Some of the family history was shared with me, and I welcome the opportunity to put down on paper one family's history in the United States.
Demonstration/Tasting times are: 12:30 and 2:30 pm.
