This Sunday May 22 at 11am - enjoy classic movie LOVE BUG

Once a month, check out the family movie treat at Hammer Museum ... and catch the exhibits on free Thursdays :)

When a Volkswagen Bug follows him from the dealership, racecar driver Jim Douglas doesn’t know what to think but soon discovers this is no ordinary car! With the help of his equally eccentric mechanic, played with comic gusto by Buddy Hackett, Douglas takes his four-wheeled magical friend out on the racing circuit while trying to keep it out of the hands of an evil car dealer. The original big-screen incarnation of Herbie, “The Love Bug,” remains a timeless classic for the whole family. Get ready and start your engines for fun! (1968, 35mm, color, 108 min. DIR: Robert Stevenson)
Hammer Kids and Family Flicks are made possible, in part, through the generosity of K.A.M.P. (Kids’ Art Museum Project) supporters and friends.
K.A.M.P. is the Hammer Museum’s annual family fundraising event.

THE MOUSE AND HIS CHILD family movie on April 10 at 11am at Hammer Museum

Hammer Museum's Billy Wilder Theatre is the location for UCLA's Family Flicks movies.  We have enjoyed many classic as well as foreign films for children as part of this monthly series for many years.  Back when it was held at UCLA, there were always cookies and juice during the intermission between the double features.

If we were not ladybug-hunting on Sunday April 10 in the mountains, we would have gone to see this movie! Well, there is always the book to read :)  ENJOY!

The Mouse and His Child (1977)

The Mouse and His Child (1977)
April 10, 2011 - 11:00 am
Free Admission

Directed by Charles Swenson and Fred Wolf

Adapted from the classic children’s novel of the same name by Russell Hoban, The Mouse and his Child has been unfairly neglected as a misfit film: A musical animated feature for children, it also channels many of the darker, philosophical themes of its source. The father and son of the title are mechanical toy mice, connected at the hands, who embark on a wondrous, perilous quest to become self-winding after a toy shop accident sends them to a landfill. Helped and harried by a menagerie of creatures, including an evil rat (voiced by Ustinov) who enslaves broken toys for his nefarious plots, father and son ultimately succeed in their journey, but not before the impressionistically drawn film touches on the nature of existence, the limits of infinity and the rigors of experimental theater. This is an odd one, but also one not to be missed.
Recommended for ages 10+

Based on the novel by Russell Hoban. Producer: Walt DeFaria. Screenwriter: Carol Monpere. Cinematographer: Wally Bulloch. Cast: Peter Ustinov, Cloris Leachman, Sally Kellerman, Andy Devine, Neville Brand. Presented in English dialogue. 35mm, Color, 83 min.

This Sunday, November 14, 2010, make festive block-printed table runners at Fowler Museum after Hammer Museum's family movie, The Black Stallion

UCLA Fowler Museum hosts a free family art event in its courtyard each month.  Last month, we made glow-in-the-dark paintings about the moon and moonbeams based on a Indonesian weaver's legend.  From the same informative exhibit about Indonesian weavers, this Sunday, you can block-print a table runner in time for November's Thanksgiving festive feast.

If this is your first visit to UCLA's Fowler Museum, please note admission is free and check out campus parking and public transportation options here:  http://www.fowler.ucla.edu/visit

Fowler Museum's permanent anthropological and silver exhibits and the frequently changing exhibits make a monthly visit to coincide with its family art workshops on a Sunday worthwhile.  Next month, on Dec 12, the family gets to make Korean kimchi and decorate a jar in conjunction with its Korean food exhibit which opens this Sunday.

We plan to go to this event after seeing Hammer Museum's free monthly family movie starting at 11am - this Sunday, it is the Black Stallion - see details below. While there, don't miss entering Hulian Hoeber's gravity-defying house installation on its upper floor terrace. It reminds us of Confusion Hill in Huell Howser's roadside attraction show.  Pretend to be superman or see a ball roll upwards .  http://hammer.ucla.edu/exhibitions/detail/exhibition_id/189

To enjoy Hammer Museum free, go on Thursday and it is open from 11am to evening.

Family Flicks: The Black Stallion

Carroll Ballard (Duma) made his feature debut with this gorgeous adaptation of Walter Farley’s classic novel about a boy and a majestic stallion who meet during an ocean voyage and bond while stranded on a picturesque desert island. Ballard balances action with subtle characterization, convincingly detailed art direction, and breathtaking cinematography by Caleb Deschanel. (1979, 117 min. Dir: Carroll Ballard 35mm, color)
