EAT REAL festival in Culver City, July 16 and 17, and see how food is really made or grown. Volunteer opportunity to valet-park bikes!

Amidst food trucks selling everything at $5, families can learn by seeing demonstrations of how cheese is made, bread is made, how food is canned or pickled, and even how to raise chickens :)  There will be competitions too.

This is the official description:

Eat it. Make it. Grow it.

Imagine a combination street food festival, county fair, and block party where people can come together to celebrate good times and fresh, local food. At Eat Real, we’ve created a space where not only can you try tasty, handmade eats and drinks, but where you can also discover where your food comes from, meet the people who grow and make it, and learn how it’s made. You can even try your hand at making it yourself.
With free entry and no food item costing more than $5 – all food includes local, organic, and sustainable ingredients – we believe eating real does not have to mean eating real expensively. Really.

Saturday, July 16, 2011 Indonesian Festival in Los Angeles if you don't need to use the 405

Indonesia, an archipelago of islands in Southeast Asia, is home to amazing cultural sites and natural heritage (think Komodo and Sumatran rhinos!).

Borobudor is a Buddhist world heritage site comparable to Angkor Wat that is quite astounding in its geometrically interesting architectural design.

Bali has a little-known jewel besides its beautiful beaches, temples, terraces, cuisine, art and people ... a little-known safari resort where you can see African and Asian animals close up!  We stayed on a good-value package (discounted deals online) at Mara River Safari Lodge over New Year's eve two years ago because we could not find a hotel that weekend.  Turned out to be the best animal encounter vacation we ever had and staying at the hotel is better than buying a one-day entry pass to the park.  In addition to all the healthy animals you can see on the ride (one included safari tour per day with the hotel), there are scheduled animal feedings ... see a white tiger climb up a tree to get its food or see a piranha feeding frenzy.  There was an animal encounter for hotel guests each evening at the hotel lobby and we had the opportunity to stroke and carry a 5-month old tiger and also feed elephants on the evening of a live Ramayana performance featuring real elephants.  Lions have their den right next to the restaurant and you will see lions right outside your restrooms' big window.  Meerkats also have their home right outside the lobby.  So if you go to Bali with children, consider staying at this Lodge for a day or so.   The hotel lodges oversee a moat and you will see the rhino come right up along with other animals wandering around.  It is a vacation you will not forget :)

Meanwhile, on the weekend that 405 is closed, come and enjoy the Indonesian Festival and enjoy the dances and food.

Welcome to "Indonesian Festival 2011," an annual event to commemorate our independence organized by Indonesian Consulate General and Community in Los Angeles. This year's festival is aimed at commemorating 66 years of Indonesian Independence. The theme of the festival is "A presentation of Wonderful Indonesia for LA and Its Surroundings."

The festival presents more than 20 groups of Indonesian traditional dancers, including groups from Jakarta. It also exhibit skillful musicians playing unique traditional musical instruments from Indonesia such as Javanese and Balinese Gamelan and North Sulawesi Kolintang. Also, scheduled to perform are some local talents and well-known Indonesian singers to perform from Indonesian Pop to keroncong and dangdut.

The festival is also an opportunity for local Indonesian restaurants to showcase the amazing cuisines of our country.

The festival also introduces various business and tourism opportunities from the expo of both Indonesian services and goods. A fashion show of the well-known batik brand will also take part in this event. In the meantime, the display of keris (traditional Indonesian sword) and contemporary batik will certainly enrich the event from the perspective of cultural heritage.
